Allergies in Austin

Don’t get me wrong, I love Austin and can’t image living anywhere else, but seasonal allergies are taking a toll on not only me but my family, friends and DOG! I have great empathy for anyone that suffers through mold, ragweed, pollen and the dreaded Cedar Fever, but what ever my dog IZZY is suffering from is driving her and ME crazy! Yesterday after a very expensive vet visit we finally have some relief from the almost constant scratching! In talking with other dog owners I hear this isn’t unique and many other pets are affected as well. So for now we’re back to our walks and are enjoying this glorious Austin weather! What a great place to live!

  1. Allergies in Austin really can be the worst! My husband and I take herbs year-round to boost our immune systems. So far, I’ve yet to find something that will keep me from getting super tired when the allergens are high. Good luck out there!

  2. Dogs are family in my house. Thank heavens my dogs aren’t suffering and scratching from allergies. Good luck

Knock on wood I think I’m the only one that hasn’t gotten hit hard by them this year – must be that bubble I’m living in

  4. Just wait until the Cedar pollen hits!

  5. I have a theory that if I keep hiking the Barton Creek greenbelt during cedar fever season and breathing in all the pollen that I will build up an immunity! Who knows! I am fortunate to not have severe allergies but I do know most residents in Austin suffer from sort of reactions to all the pollen and mold. In my opinion it is a small price to pay to live in such a great city!

  6. We moved here from the allergy capital of the US – Prescott AZ.- and never had problems. The only allergy I seem to have here is to the mold, but it isn’t too bad. I know there are some great allergy specialists in the Austin area for those who need help coping!

The even more unfortunate thing is that many people don’t develop allergies until they move to Austin. I personally was allergy-free for 30 years prior to moving here. It took almost seven years for allergies to cedar and mold to develop, but develop they did. Sigh… Sniff….

  8. Usually Joe is hit pretty hard by the allergy season here in Austin, but this year has been pretty mild according to him. I wonder if it has anything to do with the allergy shots he started the year before last…he didn’t keep up with them, but his symptoms haven’t been bad since! Hopefully Izzy will get the same relief soon!

Yup, I have a buddy that has a German Sheppard. It is still a puppy (at 105lb) but has this seasonal rash thing that has him all howling and itching up a storm. His coat gets all patchy too :(
